The step up transformer is used to step up the voltage and step down transformer do the reverse that is step down the voltage applied to it. The basic difference between the two transformers is in their secondary and primary voltages. A step-up transformer has secondary voltage is greater than its primary voltage and vice-versa with step-down transformer.
The voltage ratio between primary and secondary determines the turns ration of the transformer. One can easily reverse connect the single phase transformers of about 1kva to step-up or step-down transformers. The insulation made from mylar, nomex, kraft paper, varnish, or other materials are placed between the turns of wire to prevent shorting to one another or to ground.
